Ostuni
The “Città bianca” emerges like a mirage of light 35 km west of Brindisi, in the Puglia region, 8 km from the Adriatic coast. A pleasure for the eyes, but also for the taste buds, Ostuni located on the Appia dei vini is heir to a rich gastronomic and wine tradition.

History of Ostuni
Inhabited since the Stone Age, Ostuni developed its first urban core in the 7th century BC. BC, with the arrival of the Italic people of the Messapians. The Greeks then took control of the city during the Punic Wars and took the opportunity to leave their indelible mark on it.

As with most villages in southern Italy, Ostuni saw the Saracens, the Byzantines, the Normans, the Aragonese and the Spanish pass through, who, like the Greeks, did not fail to leave their marks.

The history of the white houses
The appearance of white facades in Ostuni dates back to the time of the plague in the 17th century. The local authorities decided to whitewash the entire city in order to illuminate every corner; this having been done with the aim of capturing the lepers.

Ostuni today
Ostuni at the heart of its ramparts adopts a medieval layout on three hills in the Puglia region. The stairs visible almost everywhere and the tangle of small streets facilitate the transit of pedestrians. If white remains the dominant color within the city, the pink and gray limestone rock of the religious buildings adds pep to the horizon, in addition to the stone forming the ramparts.

The historic center of Ostuni
The historic center of Ostuni sits on the highest of the three hills above which the city extends. Its whitewashed facades and its layout are at the heart of the city's picturesque urban identity. Within it, the alleys and staircases follow one another, sometimes overlooking centuries-old arches and squares. It is not uncommon to come across an artisan workshop or a souvenir shop for your shopping, but also a café-restaurant where you can refresh yourself during the climb. At the top of Ostuni, the episcopal palace and the cathedral nail the show with their monumental appearance and a plunging panorama in the background.
