The Hisense U8K is a big improvement from last year’s model and is probably the best Mini LED TV we have yet seen from the company. It is not all perfect, there are some issues with clouding and dirty screen effect which is a by-product of the technology used, and we also noted raised black levels with scope film content and in comparisons.

HDR tone mapping could also be better as we see detail clipping from 600 nits with HDR10 content and only two HDMI 2.1 ports with eARC using one of those is also a potential negative for gamers. But having pointed all of those issues out, the overall performance of the U8K is very good indeed for a Mini LED TV, with excellent calibrated image accuracy, very good shadow detail retrieval and decent overall black levels. Colour accuracy with SDR and HDR is very good with excellent gradational performance, natural-looking colours and lifelike skin tones.

With very good gaming capabilities, including 4K/120Hz gaming in Dolby Vision thanks to the use of the new Pentonic SoC, a games menu bar and frame rate counter, and very good sound quality thanks to a built-in soundbar and subwoofer, the Hisense U8K offers very good performance for the money and comes *recommended*.

*The good*
1700+ nits of peak brightness available
Accurate greyscale and colour with SDR and HDR once calibrated (FMM is good OOTB)
Two HDMI 2.1 inputs at 48Gbps with very good gaming credentials
Very good sound quality and build.

*The not-so-good*
HDR10 tone mapping can clip detail higher than 600 nits
Dynamic HDR tone mapping over brightens the image
Some DSE, clouding and banding seen
