Women’s Empowerment in Tibetan Buddhism: The Changing Role of Nuns in Tibetan Buddhism
The Department of Religion and Culture and the Dalai Lama Trust recently hosted a two-day conference on Women’s Empowerment in Tibetan Buddhism at the Dalai Lama library and archives in Dharamshala. The conference deliberated on curriculum development in nunneries, institutional support for the nunnery, the leadership role of Geshemas in society and monastic institutions, and prospects for greater international recognition of Buddhist women. We sat down with two Geshemas from Dolma Ling Nunnery and Institute to discuss their perspectives on women’s empowerment in Tibetan Buddhism, the evolving role of nuns in contemporary society, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
