Chapter 4 - Energy-Based Devices_Aesthetic Courses at The Derma Academy Germany and UK
Chapter 4: Energy-Based Devices – Short Description
While lasers dominate the aesthetic landscape, a wide range of non-laser energy-based devices offer powerful, often safer alternatives – particularly for melanin-rich skin (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of these technologies, their mechanisms, and clinical applications.
You will learn:
Radiofrequency (RF) devices – Monopolar, bipolar, multipolar, and fractional RF. How they heat tissue without targeting melanin, making them color-blind and ideal for all skin types.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) / BroadBand Light (BBL) – Broad-spectrum light for vascular lesions, pigmentation, and photoaging. When to use it – and when to avoid it in darker skin.
Electromagnetic muscle stimulation (EMS) – Non-thermal devices for muscle toning and body contouring (e.g., Emsculpt®).
Cryolipolysis – Controlled cooling for fat reduction without skin damage. Patient selection, safety, and managing paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH).
Ultrasound – High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for lifting and tightening. Deep dermal heating without epidermal injury.
Plasma energy – Nitrogen or helium plasma for skin resurfacing (limited role in darker skin).
Combination devices – RF + microneedling, laser + ultrasound, and other hybrid platforms.
Key focus areas:
Inclusive practice – Why RF and ultrasound are often safer than lasers for Fitzpatrick V–VI.
Downtime management – Expected recovery and complication prevention for each device.
Evidence-based protocols – Session numbers, energy levels, and treatment intervals.
Whether you are expanding your aesthetic toolkit or choosing the right device for a specific patient – this chapter equips you with the knowledge to use energy-based devices safely, effectively, and inclusively.
