While everybody's vocal journey is different, it's definitely true that guys have their own special needs when it comes to learning how to sing. That is not to say that it's easier for guys or girls to learn how to sing better. Just that everyone's vocal journey is different.

In this video, I'm going to generalize a lot, however I have noticed that after teaching lots and lots of men, there are some individual differences with teaching males how to sing better. Today, we'll go over the biggest ways in which guys' voices are different, the three most common mistakes that men make when they sing, and my 5 favorite exercises for guys.

In general, men's voices are different from women's in that men have bigger vocal instruments. That means that the vocal folds are larger, the larynx is larger, and the vocal tract or the distance from the vocal cords to the lips is also larger.

All three of these things are the reasons that men's voices are lower and thicker than most women's. Unfortunately however, that also means that a man's transition or bridge from the chest voice to the Head voice is usually more pronounced than women's. This is also due to the fact that men tend to use way more chest voice throughout their day than women. In general men speak in chest voice all day long, whereas women tend to speak with more inflection.

You can also see that men's voices are different in terms of their vocal range. Most men's range has about two-thirds of the range in chest voice. Where most women's range has about one-third of their vocal range in chest voice.

The three most common mistakes that men make when they sing is 1) they will try to muscle up through their bridge. This takes the form of pulling up chest voice from the bottom to the top of their voice.

The second most common mistakes that men make when they sing is disconnecting to falsetto. This means that rather than singing more smoothly through their vocal break, they disconnect to falsetto completely.

Finally, a common mistake with men is they will muscle up so much is that they disconnect falsetto. This is kind of like a muscle that is so strained that it finally gives up.

In general, the solution to all three of these problems is that most men need to thin out their voices through their first Bridge or passage in order to make it through to their head voice. So I'm going to show you my five favorite exercises for guys to sing better.

In the first exercise, you're going to sing an octave and a half lip Trill where you sing an octave and a half arpeggio with your lips flapping.

In the second exercise, you'll sing an octave and a half “ng” as in the word “rung”. In this exercise, you'll sing an octave and a half arpeggio where you replace each note of the arpeggio with the sound “ng” as in “rung”. This will sound very nasal that will help you thin out as you go to your bridge.

In the third vocal exercise for guys, you'll sing an octave and a half Dopey or Yawny “Gee” as in the word “Geese”. In this exercise we’ll sing an octave and a half scale to replace each word in a scale with the word “Gee”.

In the fourth exercise for guys to sing better, you'll sing an octave and a half Bratty “Nay”. In this scale you replace every note in the scale with the word “nay” as in “neighbor”.

In the final exercise for guys to sing better you'll sing an octave and a half arpeggio with the bratty “Nae” as in nasty.

You'll find that most of these exercises will help you transition up to the top part of your voice better. But if you have any trouble, just go back to an exercise that works really well for you and try to apply that same feeling to all the other exercises.

Learning to sing better for guys takes time especially guys that are going through their adolescence. But the most important thing is that you keep experiencing the top part of your voice.
