Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 17 | Thirty joists later, the first floor is DONE!

Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). In this episode, we build the rest of our first floor. This involved notching and installing 20 more floor joists into the girders. The middle 10 floor joists are done in the same way as the first 10, which are shown in episode 16. The last 10 joists, the ones supporting the front porch, are notched slightly differently because we want them to overhang the porch structure. This will give us more floor space on the porch and better protect the structure from rain and weather. The notches over the porch girder are simplified saddle notches. We also put down some OSB floor boards as a temporary floor so we can work more easily for the rest of the build.

Now that our 30 floor joists are installed, the next step will be to start raising the walls higher and higher, one log at a time!
