Z3 M52 M54 Oil Pump Nut Fix and Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

In this episode, I remove the oil pan to inspect the oil pump nut on this M52TU engine, and replace it with one that is drilled to be tied off with safety wire. It's a common procedure to help prevent oil pump system issues at high, sustained RPMs.

This job naturally requires replacing the oil pan gasket as well, which I show in the video. I also show how I repaired several damaged oil pan bolt threads on the engine block using a "helicoil"-type repair kit.

As I explain in the video, I don't recommend this procedure for aluminum M52 and M54 engines 2.8 liters or under in displacement, due to the risk of shearing oil pan bolts, and the low risk of oil pump issues at normal RPMs.

While I don't mention it in the video, it's also pretty unlikely that your oil pan gasket needs replacement, as most oil leaks on the M52 and M54 motor originate from the oil filter housing gasket or the valve cover gasket. Oil from these leaks have a tendency to travel around the engine block and make it appear your leak is from the oil pan gasket or something else.

Finally, as always, proceed with caution, and take your time. I am not responsible for any damage you may incur to your vehicle or your person while attempting the work shown in the videos.
