Part 29: Rail Towns, Hobo Haven & Odd Roadside Finds in Nebraska | Following the California Zephyr!

#CaliforniaZephyr #HolbrookNebraska #ArapahoeNebraska #EdisonNebraska #OxfordNebraska

Day 10 begins as we continue following the California Zephyr route across Nebraska, exploring small towns, railroad history, and the unexpected roadside discoveries that make backroad travel so rewarding.

Leaving our campsite at Medicine Creek, we’re treated to a beautiful Nebraska sunrise before stumbling across something truly unique—a converted railroad passenger car sitting in someone’s yard, now serving as a home. It’s a perfect reminder of how deeply the railroad shaped life across the Midwest.

As we continue down the road, we begin noticing unusual “creations” in people’s yards, eventually stopping to film one of the most creative pieces of folk art we’ve seen—a motorcycle constructed entirely from old farm equipment.

Our first town of the day is Holbrook, Nebraska, where we explore its quiet streets, uncover local history, and find some truly odd sights—including a tiny arched doorway that looks like it belongs in a Hobbit house and a large, mysterious numbered grid painted directly onto the road.

Next, we arrive in Arapahoe, Nebraska, a larger community along the route, where we’re surprised to find a new car dealership—something rarely seen in towns of this size.

In Edison, Nebraska, we discover one of the larger grain elevator operations in the area and reflect on how so many towns along the California Zephyr route were created by the railroad itself—unlike other parts of the country where towns existed before the tracks arrived.

We finish the episode in Oxford, Nebraska, a historic railroad junction that once played a key role during the hobo era of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Known as “Hobo Haven,” the area along the Republican River became a gathering place for transient workers traveling by rail in search of opportunity. We explore the area where it may have once existed and reflect on this fascinating chapter of American history.

If you enjoy RV travel, boondocking, scenic drives, small town exploration, and uncovering hidden stories across America, this series is for you.
