Breastfeed to minimize vaccination pain – 6 months

Vaccination Time: How to reduce crying and pain during babies' immunizations!

Be Sweet to Babies
Research shows - for infants less than 12 months of age:
1. Breastfeeding before, during and after the injection reduces pain in babies. For best effect, begin breastfeeding 2-5 minutes before the needle.
If your baby requires a further injection in the other leg, position your baby on the other breast. Ensure your baby has latched and is sucking well before the next needle is given.

2. If you are not breastfeeding, giving small amounts of sugar water before and during pokes reduces pain in babies.

Remember -- Be Sweet to Babies during vaccinations
Ask your nurses or doctors about breastfeeding during vaccinations or other needles as well as other ways we can help babies during painful procedures.
