The TRUTH About The Utah Jazz

https://youtu.be/3eqCIbmFvoE
At the time this video is being recorded, the Utah Jazz possess the best record in the Western Conference and in the entire NBA as well; yes, better than the Lakers and the Clippers, better than the Bucks and the Nets. What’s interesting is that very few people have even batted an eye. Their current 18 – 5 record is on pace to reach 56 – 16 this season, or 64 wins if they were playing a full 82-game season. And you may think this great record early on in the season might be a byproduct of a weak schedule, but the Jazz actually hold quality wins over the likes of the Clippers, the Bucks, the Nuggets, and the Dallas Mavericks twice. Starting on the night of January 8th, Utah went on an 11-game winning streak that was recently ended by the Nuggets in the teams’ second meeting, but the Jazz is still 14 – 1 through their last 15 games. Impressive, right?

This is indeed impressive to many given the multiple questions that arose surrounding the Jazz franchise after they gave up a 3 – 1 lead in the first round of last year’s Bubble NBA playoffs. Donovan Mitchell looked like a superstar in the making, but could he become that player in Utah? Rudy Gobert is a great rim protector and one of the best defenders in the league, but can he survive when it matters most – in the NBA playoffs – and is he worth the $205 million super max contract the team gave him in the offseason? Could Mike Conley consistently perform in his former All-Star fashion ever again? Is this supporting cast good enough to create a contender? It’s funny because all of these questions have been answered – at least to some extent – one-third into the 2020-21 regular season.

Despite some mild struggles and inconsistencies to kick off his season, Donovan Mitchell is still playing at an All-Star level, averaging 23 points and a career-high 4.6 assists, while shooting 40.7% on 8.4 three-point attempts per game, both of which are also, far and away, career-best marks. Rudy Gobert, the $205 million man, has had very similar numbers to his All-Star season from last year. What’s most impressive is the fact that other than scoring, Gobert is posting career-high or near career-high numbers across the board while averaging less than 30 minutes a night. In comparison, he played 34.3 minutes per game last year, which was his best season as a pro.
Mike Conley has re-emerged from the shadows and is quietly having his best season since the 2016-2017 campaign, and is currently up to 16.5 points and six assists per game on 44.6% shooting from the field and 40.3% from three. Watching Conley being this productive is particularly exciting considering he plays alongside one of the highest-usage guards in the entire NBA. Meanwhile, Conley’s usage has regressed and is middle-of-the-pack relative to other point guards, which only supports the fact he’s making the best out of every opportunity he has with the ball in his hands.

Mitchell is obviously the team’s leading scorer, but without looking it up, try and guess who is the second-leading scorer for the Jazz; you have five seconds, so hurry! Five… four… three… two… one… Did you say Mike Conley, or Rudy Gobert, or Bojan Bogdanovic (more on him later, by the way)? All of these are wrong, and we bet you’d never guess who it was: Jordan Clarkson!!!

The former second-rounder was never supposed to amount to much, but his transition into one of the league’s elite bench scorers has been incredible. No other bench player is averaging more points than Clarkson’s 17.7. He’s shooting 47% from the field and 39% from three and become the spark plug that Utah’s second unit desperately needed. Clarkson is leading the Jazz’s bench alongside Joe Ingles, who has seamlessly made a transition into another lethal off-the-bench scorer with the return of Bojan Bogdanovic. Ingles has sustained similar scoring numbers and hasn’t had to sacrifice any of his shots, but it’s how he’s increased his efficiency that’s allowed him to remain as important despite seeing less minutes.
