Why I chase after Asia's biggest typhoons

Storms don’t always behave the way forecasts predict.

Some typhoons can suddenly explode in strength just hours before landfall — leaving communities with little time to react.

“There’s a part of me that’s an adrenaline junkie,” says storm chaser James Reynolds, who has spent 20 years tracking Asia’s strongest typhoons. “But I want and I hope to get the most accurate, reliable what we call 'ground truth' out to the public.”

To understand why storms intensify so quickly, teams like his head straight into the eyewall — capturing what satellites can’t see.

What they find could change how we predict the next disaster.
