Friendship 7 Flight Animation

On February 20, 1962, Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. became the first American to orbit the Earth. After two sub-orbital hops made by Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom, Glenn rode atop the far more powerful Atlas booster during a 4-1/2 hour mission during which he made three orbits of the Earth.

Despite several technical issues throughout the flight, Mercury-Atlas 6 (known better by the callsign Friendship 7) was a resounding success and massive leap forward in the American space program.
