The Siberian Boy Who Made Waterproof Tar from Pine Bark

This is a kids' business story from the "old days" of the Russian Taiga (1890s).

Ivan lived near a logging operation where huge piles of pine bark were discarded as waste. He realized that builders and fishermen desperately needed cheap, effective, local waterproofing tar.

By slow-burning the pine bark in a pit kiln, Ivan extracted and stabilized "Smola Krepleniya" (Sealing Tar). This local tar was superior for waterproofing boat hulls and sealing log cabins (*izbā*).

This is the story of how he gained contracts with the local fishing cooperative and builders, transforming the logging industry’s biggest waste stream into an essential protective supply for life in the Siberian wilderness.

Moral: The solution to protecting local goods from the elements is always found in the elements' own abundant plant life.
