Pioneer M-22 Class A power amplifier + Pioneer C-21 preamplifier – test

This Pioneer combo is for those who want more than just a good-looking vintage set—they want real substance behind it. The M-22 is a true Class A stereo power amp: factory-rated at 30 W per channel, weighing around 22 kg, with a direct-coupled design using a two-stage differential layout and a Darlington, parallel push-pull output stage. Its specified frequency response is 2 Hz–150 kHz, signal-to-noise ratio is 106 dB, and rated power consumption is 280 W—clear signs that this is a serious, warm-running, classic Class A heavy hitter.

The C-21 is a very worthy partner. According to the original documentation, both the phono and line stages use two-stage differential, Class A circuits with a current-mirror design. On the phono input, load impedance can be set to 100 Ω, 10 kΩ, 25 kΩ, 50 kΩ, 75 kΩ, or 100 kΩ, and capacitance can be set to 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, or 500 pF—giving 36 different loading combinations. It also includes a subsonic filter, making it a genuinely serious preamp for turntable-based systems as well. Dimensions are 420 × 81 × 357 mm, and weight is about 6.3 kg.
