Braxton hicks contractions -- or practice contractions -- help tone your uterus in preparation for real labor. Some women never notice these contractions, some women find that they occur randomly, and some women find them a little uncomfortable. Confusing, right?
First, when do they start? Braxton hicks contractions can start anywhere from 6-20 weeks, but some mamas never even feel them. In my first pregnancy, I didn’t. My midwife said if she hooked me up to a monitor that she would probably see subtle ones register despite my lack of feeling. The more babies you have, or the closer you get to your due date, the more you will probably feel Braxton Hicks.
I know what you’re thinking: how will I know when I’m having Braxton Hicks? It can be scary to think you’re going into premature labor at 20 weeks! So it’s a good idea to know what these “practice contractions” feel like compared to a true labor contraction.
Braxton hick's contractions start out as a mild tightening in the front of the uterus. These are generally much higher up than where you would feel menstrual cramps, deeper in the pelvis.
If you have Braxton Hicks, use this time to practice! Just as your body is practicing for labor, you can use this time to practice tuning into your body, breathing, relaxing, and following the contraction from start to finish.
Pregnancy is full of exciting weekly milestones, and getting braxton hicks is just another one on your journey to meet your baby. And remember, these types of contractions are just your body’s way of practicing, and they aren’t harmful to you or your baby. I find the moms who have the most Braxton Hicks tend to have faster labors, so you got that going for you!
And no matter how far along you are, always, always call your doctor or midwife if you think you’re experiencing true labor contractions.
