Senior Republicans speak on US presidential outcome

Several senior Republican figures have spoken out on the United States presidential election results, with Donald Trump facing pressure from some to concede defeat as he seeks legal remedies in the court.

In a recent tweet, the president said, “Since when did the Lamestream Media call who our next president will be?”

Former Republican president George W. Bush revealed he had contacted President-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and congratulated them on their election victory, saying “though we have political differences I know Joe Biden to be a good man who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country”.

He also congratulated Mr Trump and his supporters for their campaign efforts and acknowledged his “right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges”.

Mr Bush said, however, the electoral process did not appear unfair.

Utah Senator Mitt Romney also spoke on the matter, saying “I would prefer to see the world watching a more graceful departure but that’s just not in the nature of the man”.

Reports have also emerged suggesting First Lady Melania Trump was encouraging the president to concede defeat.
