The Fall of Hong Kong — When Japan Strikes the British Empire

Beginning December 8, 1941, Japanese forces attacked from the mainland, quickly seizing the New Territories and Kowloon Peninsula.

The defenders, including British, Canadian, and Indian units, regrouped on Hong Kong Island and fought fiercely at Mount Butler, Wong Nai Chung Gap, and Stanley.

Despite brave resistance, Japanese troops breached the island’s defense line by December 24th.

On December 25, 1941, British Governor Sir Mark Aitchison Young surrendered — marking the first Allied colony to fall to Japan.

This video presents a clear military analysis of the campaign, the terrain, and the strategic consequences that followed.

The fall of Hong Kong signaled the beginning of Japan’s domination across East Asia.
