EURO 6 technology MAN Lion's City

As from 2014, all newly registered vehicles must meet the requirements of the EURO 6 emission standard. In comparison with EURO 5, EURO 6 means a further reduction in NOx emissions by 80 percent and a reduction in the permitted particulate mass by 66 percent.
The two proven MAN emission control technologies MAN PURE DIESEL® (EGR) and MAN AdBlue® (SCR) are technologically combined for the environment-friendly EURO 6 diesel engines.
A new feature of the MAN Lion's City is the use of the additional operating fluid AdBlue® for nitrogen oxide reduction. The tank sizes for the non-toxic and non-hazardous urea solution are matched to the diesel tank volume.
The fully-developed MAN engine technology with common rail fuel injection, regulated exhaust-gas recirculation EGR and two-stage turbocharging with intercooling will be supplemented by the new SCRT system for EURO 6.
The SCRT system is located in the two-stage exhaust silencer. It consists of the particulate filter, which has been enlarged in comparison with EEV, and the downstream SCR catalytic converters.
The particulate filter features an electronic monitoring function that indicates when cleaning is necessary. The particulate filter achieves a separation rate of up to 99 percent. The system is continuously regenerated by oxidation of the soot particulates retained in the filter material into gaseous carbon dioxide. The particulate filter is therefore largely maintenance-free.
Demand-based injection of the AdBlue® urea solution takes place after the particulate filter.
Ammonia is produced from the urea in the SCR catalytic converter module, enabling subsequent chemical conversion of the nitrogen oxides into the harmless substances nitrogen and oxygen.
The ammonia oxidation catalytic converter prevents emission of excess ammonia -- so-called ammonia slip.
