How To Find Your Niche And Build An Agency Brand
"Riches are in the niches" was good advice a decade ago.
But now every niche has a million agencies, consultants and B2B services claiming to be experts.
Here's the logic behind choosing a niche for your business:
1. It's easier to find a target market as they are clearly defined,
2. You become more attractive to the target market because they see you as an expert in their problems,
3. There's less competition than in bigger markets.
But the Internet has allowed anyone to be perceived as an expert simply by saying, "I do X for Y niche." Example: "I do app development for dentists."
Nearly everyone picking a niche says the same thing as each other.
The niche formula of expertise + niche = sales doesn't apply anymore. If you keep using that formula to its logical conclusion you would be an expert in an extremely small niche.
Back to my example... the app developer finds that there are a lot of others claiming the same thing as him so he decides to niche further. He looks at being an app developer for orthodontists. Maybe he even narrows his expertise to iOS app developer for orthodontists.
A niche is to be used as a wedge.
You find a crack in an industry and you hammer your expertise into that crack to open a path for you to enter the market. After you are in you expand from your niche to serving others in the industry who need your expertise.
Authority, Expertise, Positioning and Messaging equal your Brand.
Creating a brand is what you should be doing instead of focusing your efforts on picking the perfect niche.
