Kidney stone disease is an ancient problem but we now have very modern solutions to make a difficult problem easy. About 8-10% of Americans will be affected by kidney stones and men twice as often as women. We can look for stones in several different ways. If you get to deal with the stone early you have a much better outcome. The Ambulatory Surgery Environment is very well suited for that. Having some of the latest instrumentation is a great benefit when treating kidney stones. The C-Arm is an x-ray system that we use to visualize the stone. The ureteroscope allows us to travel just about anywhere in the urinary system. Once we've visualized and stabilized the stone we can then use a Holmium laser to turn the stone from one chunk into many small pieces. Another instrument is the Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy or (ESWL) it's an imaging system and treatment system in one. Once visualized it too can turn the stone into tiny fragments which can then easily pass through the urinary system resolving the problem.
