“WandaVision” on Disney Plus explores the American sitcom from the 50s to the 2000s. Costume designer Mayes Rubeo used prints and silhouettes to come up with the perfect looks for all the characters, focusing not just on accuracy but also on being over-the-top expressive. This means we get epic moments like Wanda showing off the original Scarlet Witch costume from the comics, and Vision doing the same in his iconic green and yellow outfit-- complete with a fake Mind Stone.
Designing these costumes was no easy feat, and neither was getting into all that makeup. Paul Bettany had to come up with a weird trick to help take off the Vision makeup after filming, since peeling it off left his skin “in tatters.” To get the perfect black and white footage for the show, Bettany had to be an entirely different color than Vision’s usual red hue, and all the potential costumes had to be photographed using a black and white filter. Hair styling was also super important, with Elizabeth Olsen’s looks taking inspiration from shows like “I Love Lucy” and “Bewitched.” Her 70s wardrobe had to be all about non-stop color, emulating fashion from “The Brady Bunch.” But one of Mayes Rubeo’s favorite characters to design for was Monica Rambeau, whose groovy look and natural afro inspired actress Teyonah Parris. Here’s all the behind-the-scenes work that went into the make-up and costumes for Marvel’s new series-- including the decade that Kathryn Hahn claims was the most difficult to film.
