AUSTRALIA TOUR WILL BOOST CONFIDENCE FOR NATIONS CUP, SAYS SALIMA TETE
Hello Everyone! Indian women's hockey captain Salima Tete has expressed that the upcoming tour to Australia will provide the team with valuable practice and help them identify areas for improvement. The tour, scheduled from May 26 to 30 in Perth, consists of four matches at the Perth Hockey Stadium. This preparation is crucial for the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup 2025-26, which will take place in Auckland from June 15-21.
Salima highlighted the inclusion of both experienced players and promising juniors, such as Sonam and Shilpi Dabas, who have shown great potential during the Hockey India League. She mentioned that the team is eager to play alongside these young talents, reflecting on their previous performance in Argentina, where they secured two wins out of four matches.
The Indian skipper conveyed the team's excitement for the Australia tour and the Nations Cup, a title they previously won in 2022. She acknowledged the support from Hockey India and the Sports Authority of India for facilitating this tour, emphasizing the importance of playing practice matches against strong opponents to enhance their game plan and penalty corner strategies.
Salima noted that communication with junior players is strong, and their skills are impressive. She believes that if the team performs well during this tour, they will enter the Nations Cup with increased confidence. However, she also pointed out the need to improve in penalty corner defense, an area where the team has struggled in recent years.
Discussing the return of coach Sjoerd Marijne, Salima appreciated his approach, which allows players the freedom to express their skills without added pressure. She remarked that he keeps the team motivated and encourages them to play to their strengths.
Salima observed positive changes in the national setup since the Hockey India League resumed, particularly how junior players are gaining experience and opportunities to join the national camp directly after the league.
On managing workloads leading up to the Asian Games and Hockey World Cup, she stated that both senior and junior players receive adequate playing time and rest, ensuring everyone can contribute effectively.
The Indian team is heading into the tour after a strong showing in Argentina, where they demonstrated resilience and secured victories. Salima Tete, a bronze medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, will lead a squad that includes seasoned players and exciting young talent. Thanks for watching JMBDD News.
