What on earth is a tea pet?

Tea pet, with its literal meaning, is the pet nourished with tea. Usually the tea pets are made of pottery clay in the shapes of toads, small animals or human figures to symbolize wealth, fortune and good luck. When brewing tea, hot tea is poured directly onto the tea pet, and after a long time, the texture of the tea pet becomes smooth and it also gives out the fragrance of tea. Some tea pets are exquisite handcrafts and of high value. Some tea pets with hollow structure can produce interesting scene such as forming bubbles or spraying water when poured by hot tea. There is a common characteristic, tea pots usually only have the mouth, but without anus, so the tea pet will not give out what it has eaten. In this way people express the traditional Chinese money-making idea of "watertight".
