I go to school in a wheelchair | I lost my legs

Hi! I’m Dora, and I’m 14. This is my story how my life changed in a flash. It’s gonna take a long time to tell you… but I hope, it’ll be interesting enough.
I was a very active kid. Mum says even when I was a baby, I had ants in pants. As far as I remember, I always ran, swam and climbed somewhere.
Willing to direct my energy in the right way, my parents took me for all the sports sections in our neighborhood. I enjoyed karate, basketball and gymnastics. But most of all, I liked swimming.
My best memories are connected with water. Here, my parents made a real water party in our pool for my birthday. And I recall my dad taught me to stay on the surfboard for the first time.
By grade 3, I managed to learn three types of swimming. So, I always took part in different competitions. But it really annoyed my form-master. Because it all took a lot of time. And of course, I had to skip a lot of lessons at school. But I didn’t care much.
Everything changed four years ago. July turned out terribly hot that year. Me and my parents tried to spend every weekend on the beach. Like on that Sunday. In the morning, we stopped at my favorite café, just around the corner from our house. And we ate magnificent pancakes. Then we all started to the beach.
By that time, the beach was already crowded. And while my parents were putting umbrellas and deckchairs, I ran into the water. I swam and enjoyed the warm water, I was in a great mood, because I was about to spend all day long with my parents. I felt really happy. If I only knew that everything would change forever in a minute...
I didn’t even get what happened. I only remember a sharp pain. At that second, the rescuer shouted in the horn: “Shark!” The pain was so intense I remember everything in a fog. Screams, the roar of a boat motor, a shot, and the thought I was dying.
I woke up in the hospital. And the first thing I saw was my parents’ faces. I exhaled and smiled: it meant I was alive. But for some reason, my parents didn’t smile at me. This put me on the alert. My head was heavy from a huge amount of drugs. And my body ached all over. The whole body? Wait, why can't I feel my legs? My legs? My legs!
It turned out the shark ate both my legs. While I was in coma, I underwent 4 surgeries. And the doctors said I was lucky to stay alive. It seemed to me they were all loose in the bean. How can you call lucky a person whose legs were bitten off by a shark?? I only felt annoyed because of this!
I remember lying in the ward. I clearly understood it was the end. No swimming, no gymnastics, no basketball - nothing! At that moment, dad came in. He smiled and said he had great news. We’d finally go home. And then, he rolled a wheelchair into the ward. I screamed. I said I’d never sit there.
Dad didn’t argue. He just carried me in his arms to the car, and then to the house. While I was in the hospital, my parents remade our house. So, I’d move around the house in a wheelchair. And they installed ramps everywhere. And in vain, because I wasn’t gonna get into the wheelchair.
All I did in the following days was just lying on the bed and staring at the ceiling. Frankly, I felt terrible. I was sad and I always cried.
My parents did their best to entertain me. They invited my classmates to me. But since I couldn’t stand school, their visits drove me deeper in the depression.
Once, Derek came into my room. I hated him most of the whole class. Derek was a jerk. He walked and talked slowly. But somehow teachers adored him. And I always hated him, because we were poles apart. And now, the slowest person in the world was standing in my room with some kind of box in his hands.
Instead of greeting, he offered me to play chess. I said I’d rather kick his head with this box than play chess with him. He didn’t say anything. Instead he started to arrange the figures and explain the rules. But I ignored him. He played with himself and went on explaining his every action.
I was shocked when he appeared with the same box the next day. And he did it day by day. He played the game with himself, explaining his every action, and left. A week later, when “Mr. Slowness” hesitated with the next move, I told him: “Can’t you see? Do the horse move!” We both laughed so loudly that my parents were scared. They ran into my room at the speed of light.
So, I started playing chess with Derek. By the way, he wasn’t that nerdy. One day, the weather was very nice. And Derek offered me to go for a walk with him. I agreed, and for the first time, I got into the wheelchair.
At first, I felt really awkward. It seemed to me the whole street was staring at me, including the neighbor’s cat. But then, I got used to it. After all, being in the wheelchair under the sun with Derek’s much better than lying in the bed all day long.
