Generator Shed / Enclosure

This is my version of a generator enclosure shed. I designed and built the enclosure to keep the generator close to the house so I wouldn’t have to drag generator from the shed, past the pool to the side of the house…in the rain, in the dark or during a snow storm. The enclosure is also designed to be completely closed while the generator is running. I have a fan to bring in fresh air and several vents installed. The exhaust was a little tricky because the generator exhaust is on the back of the generator rather than the side. I used a flexible duct and a starter flange with magnets to attach an exhaust duct.

I ran the generator in an ‘extreme’ test in the late summer. Outside temp was in the low 90’s, humidity was fairly high and it was midday. I placed a remote temperature sensor in the shed, started the generator, turned on the fan and closed up the shed. I let it run for over two hours and checked the temps every 15 minutes. After two hours the temperature rise steadied out and peaked at about 127 degrees. The midday sun was beating directly down on the top of the box. There was no noticeable performance issues with the generator. Like I said this is an extreme test, I do not anticipate running the generator under these conditions again. If I need to run the generator while it is raining, the air temperature will be much cooler and the sun position will not be a factor.
