#snorkelling with #sharks in the #maldives is an unparalleled experience, with its crystal clear waters and excellent visibility. In fact, the territorial waters around the Maldives have officially been a Shark Sanctuary since 2010. Small Blacktip Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks are two of the most commonly spotted sharks on the coral reefs of the Maldives, although occasionally Grey Reef Sharks and Nurse Sharks can also be sighted. Guests are usually thrilled to see these small, shy sharks while snorkelling on our house reef at Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences, or around the numerous coral reefs of the Maldives. If you’re lucky, you might even see tiny baby reef sharks swimming along the shoreline, less than a metre from the white sand beach.

The best way to snorkel with sharks in the Maldives is to use our complimentary snorkel gear and slide into the warm water from the private steps at the back of your water villa, or by wading into the turquoise lagoon - we’ve even published a guide to all the best snorkelling spots on our house reef. You can also book a group shark snorkelling safari or private excursion. If you’re a diver, our experienced Dive Butler team will take you to numerous sites nearby, known to be frequented by sharks, where you can sometimes spot several larger sharks between depths of 10 metres to 30 metres.

Whale Sharks are another huge draw for divers and snorkellers in the Maldives. Although they’re not actually sharks (the name is deceptive), they are officially the biggest fish in the ocean, with individuals of up to 12 metres long sometimes spotted in the Maldives. The Whale Shark is rare and endangered, but fortunately it is a protected species in the Maldives. You may be lucky enough to snorkel with gengle filter-feeding Whale Sharks in Baa Atoll between May to October/November.
