Fly Selection Made Simple: How to Choose the Right Fly Every Time

Throughout the year, you'll encounter trout eating bugs from one of these five groups:

Midges: the smallest of insects on the menu, but they're available year-round, even in the dead of winter.

Mayflies: the classic-looking bug that a lot of us probably recognize. These bugs are a bit bigger than midges, and really peak during spring and fall.

Caddis: larger than mayflies, and a bit thick and stout in appearance. These critters are most active from late spring through mid-summer.

Stoneflies: an insect that looks like a dinosaur, but thankfully doesn't bite! These big bugs are most active from late spring through early summer, although some species can hatch during late winter!

The Rest: terrestrial insects like grasshoppers and ants fall into this group, along with bugs like scuds, sowbugs, and worms.

To learn more about all the flies you can use to catch fish, and the best times of year to use them…
