The Real Reason Ubuntu is Replacing Everything With Rust...
This video is for discussion and perspective on publicly available information. Views are my own interpretations and do not necessarily reflect agreement with all points discussed, nor are they statements of fact. Please keep comments respectful. No harassment, doxxing, or wishing harm on others.
Ubuntu is changing its core, and a lot of users aren't happy... 🐧⚙️
A massive, coordinated shift is happening inside Ubuntu right now, and it's being called "The Oxidation Campaign." Canonical is systematically replacing decades-old, battle-tested C infrastructure with modern Rust rewrites. While memory safety is the stated goal, the quiet side-effect is a major shift away from GPL licensing toward permissive MIT licenses.
But it's not just about licensing. In this video, we dive into the most controversial changes coming to Ubuntu 25.10 and 26.10, including the replacement of GNU coreutils, the integration of ntpd-rs, and a highly controversial plan to strip down the GRUB bootloader a move that could break millions of existing server and enterprise deployments using LVM or full-disk encryption.
Are these necessary upgrades for modern security, or is Canonical moving too fast and breaking things? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
