Humphrey DeForest Bogart died January 14, 1957.
He was only 57 years old.
His final words will remain with us forever.
During his life he made about 56 movies,
but won an Academy Award for only one:
The African Queen.
What you may not know about Humphrey Bogart.
1. He was born on Christmas Day
Though his birthday is disputed by some,
"Bogie" assured us he was born on Christmas.
2. He was born on the last Christmas of the 1800s
Bogart was born in 1899.
He was truly a man of the 20th century.
3. His father was a surgeon
Humphrey Bogart was raised in privilege family.
His father (Belmont DeForest Bogart) was a successful surgeon.
He earn about $20,000 per year,
or about $500,000 adjusted for inflation.
4. His mother was a militant suffragette
Maud Humphrey (1868–1940) found success as a commercial illustrator.
She earned about $50,000 per year at the height of her career.
That's over $1-million adjusted for inflation.
5. He had two younger sisters
Bogart had two sisters, Frances ("Pat") and Catherine Elizabeth ("Kay").
The siblings called their mother, 'Maud.'
They were not allowed to call her 'Mom' or 'Mother'.
His parents showed little emotion towards the children,
and the two frequently fought each other.
6. He was expelled from school
Humphrey Bogart was expelled from the prestigious Phillips Academy
after he reportedly threw the headmaster into the campus pond.
That event has been disputed.
Some say it was the groundskeeper he chucked into the pond.
7. Bogart did a stint in the Navy
Rather than enroll in Yale University,
Humphrey Bogart enlisted in the Navy.
It was there he received his signature lip scar.
He was smashed in the face by a prisoner he was escorting.
The prisoner escaped, but was later recaptured.
8. His first role was a Japanese Butler
Bogart's first role was in the 1921 play, Drifting.
He had one line.
9. Bogart never took acting lessons
He learned his craft by appearing in 17 Broadway productions
between 1922 and 1935.
10. He befriended Spencer Tracey
Bogart and Tracey were friends for life.
Bogart spoke his final words to Tracey.
11. The Petrified Forest made Bogart a star
Actor and producer Leslie Howard cast Bogart in the movie,
bypassing established actor Edward G. Robinson.
Bogart named his daughter Leslie Howard Bogart to acknowledge the favor.
12. Bogart was a "homebody"
Lauren Bacall, his fourth wife, fondly considered him a "homebody".
Bacall preferred the night life.
The couple also had a son, Stephen Humphrey Bogart.
13. He weighed only 80 pounds when he died
Humphrey Bogart's last words were spoken to Spencer Tracy.
After Tracy said, "Goodnight, Bogie,"
Bogart didn't say "Goodnight."
Rather, he said, "Goodby, Spence."
He lapsed into a coma and died hours later.
