When he was young, Buddy started performing vaudeville alongside his sister, Vilma. The two were scouted by MGM and starred in the 1935 feature Broadway Melody of 1936. From there, Buddy’s career blossomed. Soon, he was performing alongside stars such as Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. While embroiled in his contract dispute with MGM, Buddy had found himself unable to work. The actor took up the hobby of sailing and was soon incredibly good at it. World War II had come along, and Buddy wanted to put his skills as a sailor to work in the United States Navy. After several rejections, the actor was forced to settle on the Coast Guard.

In the Coast Guard, Buddy served as a lieutenant on the USS Pocatello, which monitored the weather in Washington.
