Buddy Ebsen was a film and television actor that was best known for his role as Jed Clampett on the hit 1960s television sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. However, Buddy also had a long and storied life outside of his time on that show, including a stint in the military during World War II.

When he was young, Buddy started performing vaudeville alongside his sister, Vilma. The two were scouted by MGM and starred in the 1935 feature Broadway Melody of 1936. From there, Buddy’s career blossomed. Soon, he was performing alongside stars such as Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. However, the young actor’s upward trajectory was prematurely hindered by an unfortunate behind-the-scenes incident during the film of 1939’s The Wizard of Oz.
Buddy had made it all the way through the pre-production stages as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz before becoming very sick prior to filming. As it turns out, toxic aluminum dust from the make-up that Buddy had worn during rehearsals had poisoned the actor, leaving him unable to perform in the production. Buddy was replaced, and then he became involved in a bitter contract dispute with MGM.
While embroiled in his contract dispute with MGM, Buddy had found himself unable to work. The actor took up the hobby of sailing and was soon incredibly good at it. World War II had come along, and Buddy wanted to put his skills as a sailor to work in the United States Navy. After several rejections, the actor was forced to settle on the Coast Guard.
In the Coast Guard, Buddy served as a lieutenant on the USS Pocatello, which monitored the weather in Washington. On that ship, Buddy was introduced to another lieutenant by the name of Nancy Wolcott. The two became romantically involved and were soon married.
