Trademark:
It’s incredibly important to protect your brand name legally. Trademarking is the only way to protect your brand name so that another company cannot use that same arrangement of letters and logo. It costs £200 and lasts 10 years. The application process takes up to 6 months to give existing companies the chance to appeal your application. For those of you selling garments, you want to specifically register your trademark underclass 25 which is clothing, head gear and footwear.
Register your trademark here: https://www.gov.uk/topic/intellectual-property/trade-marks
Brand values:
Your values are meant to be the skeleton from which your whole brand is built around. The designs, social media voice, imagery, website, the experience and your brand merchandise should show signs of your brand values and this will ensure brand consistency in the long term.

What is the Unique Selling Point/Emotional Selling Point?
There are millions of other brands out there. Why should the consumer come to you? In order to captivate people, your response to this answer must be a succinct one sentence answer. Also, it has to be true. Customers are savvy and you don't want to get caught out on a lie. My USP is that I communicate to the customer that 'there is as much engineering in one of my garments as a smart phone'. I believe that parts of high street fashion fashion demoted the consumer perception of garment production, so my USP is to put the value back into it and communicate the level of work that goes into it.
Which brands are you adjacent to?
This is an especially important question if your looking to pitch your range to wholesale buyers. If you manage to get a meeting with a head buyer, firstly you should’ve done enough research to identify at least 3 brands that they are currently stocking that they can position your brand next to on the shop floor so that you can make sales. I know as designers, we exist to create something that no one else has done and that’s great for your own website and dealing direct to the consumer, but in the wholesale market you ideally need to play it a bit safe in the early days and once entourage brand has a reputation, a few seasons down the line, then you can introduce more off the cuff pieces.
Pricing structure:
Regardless of whether you are selling direct to consumer or via a retailer, normal rules apply. This means that your product cost price shouldn’t really exceed more than 20% of your retail price. Your wholesale price should be around 33% of your retail price as a retail will triple your wholesale price to achieve their target retail price. Whether your product is selling in a store/boutique or via your own website, the same product should be the exact same price as customers are savvy and are on the look out for these kind of things.
Range plan:
Only once you have determined your niche, split up your collection under the following categories. Concept, signature and basic. Aim for 20% of your collection to be conceptual, this stuff that’s got the wow factor that will make people think who’s that designer. 30% of you collection can be signature, this is more premium/commercial but people can immediately identify that it’s from your collection. The basic side is meant to make up 50% of your range and is made up of cheap to produce, quick to sell items. This sector will pay your bills
