Nepal, a nation of remarkable resilience, stands out as one of the few countries never colonized by any foreign power, alongside nations like Thailand, Japan, and Liberia. Shielded by its strategic geography and fierce warriors like the legendary Gurkhas, Nepal retained its sovereignty even during the height of colonial expansion in Asia.
Historically, Nepal was much larger. Before the Sugauli Treaty, signed with the British East India Company on December 2, 1815, and ratified in March 1816, Nepal’s borders extended far beyond its current dimensions. In the west, it reached the Sutlej River in present-day India, and in the east, it stretched to the Tista River in modern-day West Bengal. After the treaty, Nepal lost about two-thirds of its territory, including Sikkim, Kumaon, Garhwal, and Darjeeling.
Despite its challenges and reduced size, Nepal’s enduring sovereignty and vibrant culture stand as powerful symbols of its unyielding spirit and unparalleled history.
