Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary socialist whose ideas laid the foundation for Marxism and profoundly influenced modern political and social thought.
Early Life and Education
Karl Marx was born on May 5, 1818, in Trier, Prussia (now Germany), into a middle-class family of Jewish heritage; his father converted to Lutheranism before Marx’s birth, and Marx himself was baptized at age six. He initially studied law at the University of Bonn but soon shifted to philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he became influenced by German philosophers, particularly Hegel, and joined the Young Hegelians, a group critical of political and religious institutions. Marx earned a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Jena in 1841.
