These steps work with all of our USB cables such as the 1747-UIC, the 1747-CP3, the 1761-CBL-PM02, and the 2711-NC13. It actually works with all of our competitors cables also, we just ask that you consider buying from us next time. It should also work for any other serial device such as 3D printers or anything that needs to show up as a COM port.

We are going to start with the easiest methods first then go through the harder methods so hopefully we’ll get you taken care of as quickly as possible.

The first thing you need to do is open up your Device Manager. To do this go to your start menu, start typing “Device Manager”, and click the Device Manager link.

Without your USB to serial adapter plugged in, your Device Manager should look something like this.

Plug your USB to serial cable into your PC's USB port. Chances are the drivers are already installed. Look for it to show up under "Ports (COM & LPT)". If it does then you are all done. Note the COM number at the end of the description and proceed to the software you are using it in.

If it doesn't show up under "Ports (COM & LPT)" of the Device Manager then you need to install the drivers. They can be found in the PLC Cable Drivers section of our Drivers, Software, and Manuals page. To get there open up your web browser and type https://www.theautomationstore.com. At the top mouseover support then go to “Support, Drivers, and Downloads” Or click on this card. Find the PLC Cable Drivers section and download the file then extract the zip file to your PC. Remember where you extracted the files to.

Navigate to the "Drivers for manual installation" folder and you will find two folders named CH340 and CP210. Double click on the CH340 folder and you will find an EXE file in it. Right click it and select "Run as Administrator". Note that this will not work by double clicking the EXE file. Now navigate to the CP210 folder and then to the CP210x_VCP_Windows folder. You will see two EXE files, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit. Right click the one that matches the processor of your PC and Right click it and select "Run as Administrator". Note that this will not work by double clicking the EXE file. The easiest way to tell if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit system is to go to the start menu and type “System” but you don’t want to click on “System Information”. Depending on your version of Windows you may have to click on the Settings subgroup then your system “System” with Control Panel in gray below it. Click on it. Then under System Type you can see whether you have a 32 or 64 bit system.
Also if it says you don’t have permission to run these EXE files then you are going to need to go talk you your IT staff. There is no way around this and that is what I like about using this method is it quickly exposes permission issues.

After that you may need to restart your computer but more often than not you can simply plug in your USB cable now and it will will now show up under the "Ports (COM & LPT)" of the Device Manager.

A few other things while we are here. For some applications, your com port has to be below a certain number or for some other reason you may need to change it. To do this

Also some of you are probably wondering why I didn’t show you how to navigate to the folder if a dialog pops up. This is becoming less useful and the EXE method seems to always work.
