Princess of Wales Calls for National Recognition of Children’s Hospices

In a deeply moving new message, Kate Middleton the Princess of Wales called on the public to recognise and celebrate the life changing work carried out by children’s hospices across the United Kingdom.

In a letter released on June 15 to mark the start of Children’s Hospice Week, the Princess reflected on the warm, supportive environments these hospices create for children living with serious and life limiting illnesses, as well as for the families who care for them. She described these centres as joyful and nurturing places, praising the extraordinary role they play within communities and the dedication of the professionals who support families through every stage of their journey.

The Princess has supported children’s hospices throughout much of her public life. Soon after her marriage to Prince William in two thousand and eleven, she became closely involved with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and in 2025 she also took on the role of patron of Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in South Wales.

In her message, she encouraged people to acknowledge the many ways children’s hospices help families make the most of every moment together. She wrote that these spaces allow children to simply be children, to play, explore, express themselves and build meaningful connections. For families, she said, hospices offer compassionate places to pause, to breathe and to draw strength from a community that truly understands their experience.

She also addressed a common fear faced by many families, noting that greater awareness can help break down the belief that seeking hospice care means giving up hope. Even in the most challenging circumstances, she said, children surrounded by thoughtful, holistic care and nurturing environments can still experience joy, belonging and the freedom to be themselves.

The Princess’s message was released during a particularly busy week for the Royal Family. She appeared alongside the Prince of Wales and their three children at the King’s official birthday celebrations in London, before supporting her husband at the annual Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle.

Leaders within the hospice sector warmly welcomed her words. Representatives from East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and Tŷ Hafan said her continued support has helped raise awareness, highlight the importance of Children’s Hospice Week and remind the public of the vital role donations and fundraising play in ensuring families are never left to face their child’s illness alone.

During a visit to Tŷ Hafan earlier this year, the Princess met staff and parents whose children had been cared for there. One bereaved mother later spoke of the calm presence the Princess brought and of the hospice itself as a place of peace and closeness, where families feel supported, understood and connected to their children’s memory.
