How to opt out of sharing your data with ChatGPT for Ads

Do you use ChatGPT, free or paid? Ad tracking was activated last week for free users on Apr 30, 2026. FYI, marketing cookies are now on by default for the roughly 200M free-tier users of ChatGPT.

Cookie IDs and email addresses are shared with ad partners, including Instagram, for targeted promotions of OpenAI products.

Plus and Enterprise users are exempt, but you need to opt out if you haven't already. Free users can't opt out. The only way to opt out is to get a Plus plan or higher.

Here is how you do it:

1. Click on your name and avatar in the lower left corner of the screen

2. Choose Data Controls in the list on the left of the pop-up

3. Scroll down to Marketing Privacy in the right panel of the pop-up and click on the right arrow.

I4. It will open in the same panel with the following two selections. Slide both of them to the left to turn them off:

- Marketing measurement
- Personalized marketing

You won't be able to turn them off if you have a free account.
