Questions about how faith should operate in public life in the United States have moved to the forefront over the past few years in new, urgent, and sometimes troubling ways. It seems that we disagree about the role of faith in public life as never before. Some are claiming a special role for Christianity in American public life; others have become more suspicious of any role for any religious tradition. Each side seems convinced that the other is seeking total victory over the other and undermining the democratic process to win at all costs. The conversation has become a shouting match.
As Christians, how do we respond? How do we live out our faith in a world in which the very meaning of being a Christian in public is so contested?
At a time like this, it’s important to go back to basics—to sit together and ask some fundamental questions about how to follow Jesus Christ in every area of our lives. That’s why we’ve created a study guide for A Public Faith: How Followers of Christ Should Serve the Common Good.
In these pages, you’ll read about how faith functions—and malfunctions—in public life. You’ll read about how we carry our identity with us, and how we share what our faith has to offer, so that we can be faithful followers of Jesus Christ in a contested world.
The questions are big, and the answers aren’t simple. But they’ve never been more important. So we’re glad you’ve decided to join the conversation by engaging with A Public Faith.
