Across The DUNES - More To See Walking From Newton Porthcawl To Merthyr Mawr

There’s plenty to see as you walk from Newton Bay, Porthcawl to Merthyr Mawr sand dunes. However many times you walk this stretch of Welsh Coast there’s always a different path or something new to find.

Last summer I did a similar walk from Newton Village and across Newton Burrows

But for this hike, I went straight up over the limestone ridge which looks out to Ogmore by Sea in the East and Porthcawl in the West.

Even on the weekends or during busy bank holidays the paths across the dunes are always relatively quiet.

Before leaving Newton Bay, Porthcawl I take a look at the site of the old Red House (Ty Coch). Originally this was a warehouse dating back to the 1600s when Newton Bay was a busy harbour.

After reaching Merthyr Mawr dunes I went in search of the old volunteer rifle range and the remains of an old building (from the 1800s). It’s about 10 minutes away from the car park and Candleston Castle.

The wall remains can be found here 51° 28' 49”N 3° 38' 4" W

For the return route, I walk to the Ogmore River and down to the beach and follow the Wales Coast Path back to Newton Bay and Porthcawl.

At low tide, you can still see some of the World War II sea defences which stretched across the beach.

Hope you can all get to visit this part of South Wales soon and try some hiking in Wales for yourself.
