Floaters

Floaters appear as dark spots “floating” in the visual fields. Floaters ultimately affect most people becoming more common with increasing age. Typical complaints include seeing spots, blobs, strings, strands or squiggly lines darting about. In the case of floaters these arise within the eye. Bright lights tend to accentuate these floaters that seem to float from one place to another along with moving of the eyes.

Multiple floaters generally coexist with nearsighted individuals more often affected than those farsighted. The number of floaters does not directly correlate with the likelihood of complaints. Some people are bothered by any spots while fortunately most people readily adapt.

Floaters arise from detachment of the vitreous from the back of the retina, a generally harmless accompaniment of the passage of time. They may also become manifest as light bends when it encounters either gel-liquid interfaces or masses of collagen fibrils in the vitreous. These cast shadows on the retina and lead to the sensation of floaters.

Treating floaters is generally unnecessary and routinely more problematic than simply ignoring the situation.
