Scharwenka PIano Concerto No1 Earl Wild , Piano Boston Symphony Orchestra, Erich Leinsdorf, director. Tanglewood Festival Summer 1969. In 1969, I looked forward to a performance by pianist Earl Wild at the Tanglewood Music Festival where he was going to play the Xaver Scharwenka Piano Concerto No. 1 for piano and orchestra. I had my reel to reel all set up. I fell in love immediately with the piece and played it over and over again. Over time the reel to reel was lost and I was compelled to listen to the studio LP. It was OK but was not the live performance had recorded. Around a year 2006, I found a link online, followed it and it ended up being the librarian for the Boston symphony orchestra. I asked him if by any chance he had that 1969 recording. After searching, he said not only did he have it but it was the first stereo recording they made or those concerts. As I knew Earl Wild personally, I sent him a copy. He thanked me for it and agreed that the performance that night was far better than the studio version. Another small bit of trivia is that the piano he used was "the" Baldwin concert grand with speakers built-in. I also know pianist Dick Hyman and he use the same piano for his Concerto Electro. Very strange coincidence. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this performance as much as I did 52 years ago. Yikes!
