Szymon Jerzy Ziółkowski (born July 1, 1976 in Poznań ) - Polish athlete , hammer player , Olympic champion and world champion, member of the Sejm of the 8th term.
He comes from a family with sports traditions.
Hammer throwing was practiced by his father Jerzy, who in the years 1958–1961 was a player of Energetyka Poznań (life record 54.80), and his sister Michalina.
His brother Paweł also practiced sports in the family.
Szymon Ziółkowski became a player of the AZS Poznań sports club.
Czesław Cybulski , Krzysztof Kaliszewski and then Grzegorz Nowak trained him .
He is one of the most successful Polish athletes.
He obtained Polish junior records, won the titles of world and European champions in this age category.
In 2000, he won a gold medal at the Sydney Summer Olympics .
He also participated in the Olympics in Atlanta (1996) , Athens (2004) , Beijing (2008) and London (2012) .
He has won three world championship medals, including the championship title won in Edmonton (2001).
Five times in a row (2004–2008) he won the European Cup super league.
He won the bronze medal at the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki.
In the 1995–2009 seasons, he obtained the best results in hammer throw in Poland fourteen times.
The 2003 season was an exception, when due to an injury he only started twice.
Szymon Ziółkowski is a six-time Polish record holder and a fourteen-time Polish senior champion ( 1996 , 1997 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2011 , 2013 ).
He officially ended his sports career in 2016.
