Protect Our Planet | Conservation Collaborations | Tembe Elephants Return to andBeyond Phinda

In October last year, 11 elephants were translocated over 100 km from Tembe Elephant Park to their new home on andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.
A family unit of seven elephants, as well as four bulls, were translocated in continuation of the impressive conservation work being done to manage the elephant population in this region of South Africa.
----------
The relocation of these elephants represents a crucial step as we look to diversify and strengthen the genetics of local elephant populations, and at the same time, it represents the return of the Tembe elephants to a region that was historically part of their range. The Mun-Ya-Wana Conservancy where andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is situated, was once a vital corridor for these megaherbivores which roamed all the way into Mozambique, and the genetics of Tembe’s large-tusked elephants are endemic to the region.
----------
This translocation was made possible through the collaboration of the Aspinall Foundation, DCM Surfaces, andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Tembe Community, Conservation Solutions, Zuka Private Game Reserve, and Heligistix.
