Innovative ‘Shade Balls’ Protect Los Angeles Reservoirs from Contamination and Evaporation
In an effort to safeguard drinking water, Los Angeles has deployed 96 million black plastic balls, known as ‘shade balls,’ into its reservoirs. These four-inch, high-density polyethylene spheres float on the water’s surface, blocking sunlight to prevent the formation of bromate—a carcinogenic compound formed when naturally occurring bromide reacts with chlorine under sunlight. Additionally, shade balls reduce water evaporation by up to 90%, conserving approximately 300 million gallons annually. This innovative solution not only maintains water quality but also offers significant environmental benefits.
