Why Did Rock Legends Refuse to Record in Digital? The War Over Vinyl
Why Did Rock Legends Refuse to Record in Digital? The War Over Vinyl
Neil Young called everything recorded between 1981 and 2010 "the dark ages of recorded sound." Jack White has never made an album that wasn't recorded on analog tape. This is the story of the war between analog and digital, why some of the most famous musicians in rock history refused to cross that line, and why the numbers suggest they were right all along.
In this video we cover the full arc: from Ry Cooder's 1979 experiment as the first major-label digital recording, through the arrival of the CD in 1982, to Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms becoming the first album to sell a million copies on CD in 1985, to the Loudness War that crushed the dynamic range out of an entire decade of music. We also get into the science - what tape saturation actually does to sound, why vinyl introduces harmonic distortion that human ears find pleasing, and why the digital era produced what many engineers consider the worst-sounding era in recorded music history.
And then there's the comeback. Vinyl has grown for 18 consecutive years in the US. In 2024, 44 million vinyl records shipped - outselling CDs for the third straight year, with revenue at its highest point since 1984. Fifty-eight percent of vinyl buyers are aged 18 to 34. The legends who refused to go digital didn't just have an opinion. They were early.
