“No Votes For Women! Alabama’s Anti-Suffragists” by Ryan Blocker

The views and opinions expressed in this presentation do not necessarily reflect those of the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

As the suffrage movement gained momentum in the South, anti-suffrage groups formed to block ratification of the 19th amendment. In the August 2020 installment of Food For Thought, the Archives’ own Ryan Blocker examines the anti-suffrage movement in Alabama, its leaders, and the ideals behind their opposition to the suffrage movement.

Ryan Blocker has a passion for women's history and historic textiles that has spanned over the past twenty years. She is the Chief Curator at the Alabama Department of Archives and History and is the recent past President of the Alabama Museums Association. Blocker received a B.A. in history from Auburn University at Montgomery, and certification in Collections Care, focusing on Textile Conservation and Preservation, from the International Preservation Studies Center in Illinois.
