Zebrafish: Unlocking the genetics of melanoma

Craig J. Ceol, PhD, assistant professor of molecular medicine at UMass Medical School, is using the zebrafish to study melanoma and melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells in human skin responsible for producing the pigment melanin. These are the same cells that become cancerous melanoma.

Because the zebrafish has similar melanocytes to those found in humans, Dr. Ceol and other scientists are using the translucent fish to identify genes responsible for melanoma in the hope that this will provide new targets for potential treatments.
