pain of unrequited love afflicts the rejector, too

media often tells stories from the perspective of the rejected lover, but what about the rejector? i've recently thought about this, and it can't be so easy to break someone's heart and leave unscathed. in many cases, both perspectives suffer from the unrequited love.

i will say that most of these songs more likely represent a situation in which two lovers separate (which would imply that the love was requited at one point). but maybe the love is gone or has become distorted and one person decides to leave the relationship for that reason. i still believe that counts as unrequited love though, especially if one person really WANTS to love the other, but they just can't, not in a way where they'll both be happy.
