Haken - Favorite Songs Medley [FULL BAND INSTRUMENTAL COVERS]

(Order of songs + albums in annotations AND later in description for mobile users. Sorry about that all!)

Heyyo, one of these again. Suhweet.

Favorite band of all time right here. Their work is just all top notch and just a joy to listen to. Prog metal at it's finest, in my opinion.

This medley was a pain to do however, and has been forever in the making - or tweaking, more like. I finished recording all my guitar and bass bits about a month ago, and have spent the last month or so finding VSTs for synths/strings/pianos, and mapping those out. Some were a pain and I'm still not convinced it's perfect (ie The Point of No Return's intro still sounds a little weird to me in the piano compartment, but meh), but it's still a pretty damn good shot, if I do say so myself.

This is the first time I've done a song with so many parts outside of the rhythms, leads, drums and bass. I used some MIDI backing in the A7X Medley for A Little Piece of Heaven, but it was a short ~20 second part that wasn't a huge part of the song. In this medley? Nearly the whole medley has some sort of backing synth/strings in it. It was kinda maddening as I had to a LOT more mixing to fit everything in and make it sound nice. Not to mention I switched bass amps - from BIAS to a freeware GK Amp Sim - so I had to change around how that all sat in the mix, which was a process. It turned out okay, though c:

I hope everyone likes this as much as I do - this is my creation I'm most proud of, and the one I had the most fun doing so far.

except for point of no return's intro godammit screw that

oh also i played the bass with my fingers instead of using a pick like I usually do. i feel it turned out a lot better than it does with a pick, so ill stick with the fingers method in the future. even if it makes my fingers blister like a madman again because holy shit my fingers blistered so bad after recording all the bass parts in one night
