Brexit: the path that led to the improbable and the road ahead
Join us for a lively moderated conversation on the ins and outs of Brexit with two of McGill’s experts on the subject, hosted by Jean Raby, former CEO of Natixis Investment Managers. Our speakers, Brian Lewis, Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies and John A. Hall, Emeritus James McGill Professor of Sociology, will discuss how Brexit came to be despite widely held beliefs that the scenario was largely improbable. They will provide historical context through examples that inform the current transition, from the end of Empire, the Cold War, deindustrialization, and the transition from social democracy to neo-liberalism, all the way to the financial crisis in 2008, along with contributing contemporary factors, from the power struggle within the Tory party to leadership issues among the Liberal Democrats.
There are wide-ranging implications and fallout from the decision to separate, and in our conversation guided by moderator Caroline Bresnihan, BA’01, member of McGill’s UK/Europe Regional Advisory Board, our speakers will ultimately explore potential paths forward from the current situation. In doing so, they will address the economic impact of the decision, what the future of global trade may look like, and how to rebuild cohesion in the fractured region moving forward.
