Step-By-Step Guide to Build Your Own Second Brain 2.0: https://substack.com/home/post/p-193389395
Most “second brains” people build are actually just fancy digital junk drawers.
I spent years optimizing mine with Notion databases, tags, structured systems and it still didn’t scale.
Then I rebuilt it around a different idea I picked up from Karpathy’s recent proposal: a system that compiles over time, instead of constantly re-reading everything from scratch.
Here’s the issue with most setups:
They rely on RAG-style retrieval… meaning you’re always pulling raw notes back in, not building real compounding structure or memory.
So nothing really accumulates. It just sits there.
And honestly, the hardest part isn’t building the system, it’s ignoring the noise.
There’s so much hype and FOMO around “perfect setups” that people end up copying workflows instead of designing their own.
The best approach (I know it’s easier said than done🫣) is to take inspiration from different systems, extract what actually resonates, and build something fully tailored to how you think and work.
No AI workflow you copy will ever be a perfect fit.
And if you’re not selective about what you feed into it — based on whether it actually applies to your life — no second brain will save you. It’s like eating junk food and expecting one perfect workout plan to fix everything.
